![]() ![]() Yours Truly is an unquestionable treat, a top-shelf selection for any music fan. While it's touching to know Natalie appreciates her fans, her family, her faith, her husband and her new baby, Mary Frances, a recitation of these facts does not make for very interesting listening, especially the second time. The second comes at the end, on Natalie's self-indulgent track "Interlude," which marries a minimalist fiddle-and-piano composition with what on any other album would be the acknowledgements buried in the liner. While it's nice to hear a different take on the overplayed song, the song drags Natalie's momentum to a standstill. One, midway through the recording, is a doleful rendition of "Danny Boy" featuring former Doobie Brother Michael McDonald on vocals. The album does have two missteps, however. Yours Truly, her 10th recording, is another in a long line of exciting benchmarks in Natalie's musical evolution. While her Nova Scotian home boasts an incredible (and, some might say, unfair) number of gifted fiddlers, she, more than any other in this (or, for that matter, any) generation, has brought the island's musical traditions to the world and made traditional music exciting again, both to hear and to play. The niece of influential Cape Breton fiddler Buddy MacMaster, Natalie MacMaster has turned the music of Cape Breton, an island off the east coast of Canada. Natalie, for those who aren't already fans, is the musical ambassador from Cape Breton Island to the world. And, under her guiding hand and watchful eye, and with the assistance of a fine cadre of musicians under her wing, it almost all works to an exceptional degree. Perhaps taking a hint from the playbook of celebrated Irish-American fiddler Eileen Ivers, Natalie digs deeply into the varied branches of jazz, pop and world music. And, while there are certainly touches here and there that harken back to her roots as a pure-drop performer, Yours Truly signals her further growth into a unique and diverse star. The album pays equal tribute to Natalie's native Cape Breton tradition and her own sparkling creativity as a composer and arranger. Her immeasurable talent on the fiddle, matched only by her boundless energy, is back full force on her latest CD, Yours Truly. Newly wed and newly mommied, Natalie MacMaster shows no signs of slowing down. Mary Frances makes a brief vocal appearance in the final track, an instrumental over which Natalie thanks her fans and fellow-musicians. MacMaster was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Niagara University in New York in 2006. Yours Truly is her first release since the birth of a daughter, Mary Frances Leahy, to Nat and husband Donnell Leahy, who co-produced the album with Natalie. ![]() She has received a number of Canadian music awards, including several "Artist of the Year" awards from the East Coast Music Association, two Juno awards for best instrumental album, and "Fiddler of the Year" from the Canadian Country Music Association. In recent years she has expanded her musical repertoire, mixing her Cape Breton roots with music from Scotland and Ireland, as well as American bluegrass. Both of these self-produced albums were initially released only on cassette, but Rounder Records omitted a few tracks and re-released as A Compilation in 1998. When she was sixteen she released her first album, Four on the Floor, and a second album, Road to the Isle, followed in 1991. MacMaster began playing the fiddle at the age of nine, and made her performing debut the same year at a square dance in Glencoe Mills, Nova Scotia. MacMaster performs at Edmonds Center For The Arts, North of Seattle, WA 10-23-2010
